Northwest Travel Magazine: Radiator Whiskey

1 11 2014

The latest issue of Northwest Travel Magazine features a piece I wrote about Seattle’s Radiator Whiskey. I do a lot of eating and drinking in my line of work, and encounter great places for both endeavors on a regular basis. But this spot provided one of the best all around dining experiences I’ve had in recent memory. From the article:

“In particular, omnivores that aren’t afraid to push their boundaries will find this place with much to favor. Non-traditional anatomical regions of some of your favorite animals are creatively curated to the plate by Chefs Garrison and Palagi. Small plates like the Fried Beef Lip Terrine with Dijonnaise or the Cornflake Crusted Chicken Livers with Frank’s Red Hot and aioli are perfect representations. It’s gourmet comfort food centered around a whole-animal approach that fires on all cylinders.”

Northwest Travel Magazine: Tails & Trotters

3 06 2014

Across the globe there are regional, artisanal products with reputations for excellence: Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy, Kobe beef from Japan, and the list goes on. Oregon farmer Aaron Silverman and his partner Mark Cockcroft wanted to do the same for pork in the Northwest. And they’ve accomplished it with Tails & Trotters, producing the first signature Northwest pork.

The renowned Jamón Ibérico ham inspired the idea. In Spain, the black-footed or “pata negra” pigs are allowed to roam the oak groves of the region where they are naturally fattened on acorns. And while the Northwest isn’t exactly a great place to grow acorns, Oregon is heaven for hazelnuts. So Aaron and Mark take Washington-raised pigs and finish them on Oregon hazelnuts. The finished product is as good as it gets. Check out the whole article here. Pictured below is their Bahn Mi – A Vietnamese-style sandwich w/ pickled carrot & daikon, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro & Asian herb mayo on a fresh bakery roll.

Northwest Travel Magazine: Winter Adventure in Western Montana

2 01 2014

My latest feature for Northwest Travel Magazine is available on newsstands, or by clicking right here. This one was particularly fun to “research” :-). From the article:

“Our plan was to take snowmobiles miles up into the backcountry, spend the night in a yurt, go skiing and snowshoeing the next day, and then snowmobile back down. This all sounded great to me, and having never driven a snowmobile or slept in a yurt, I was pumped by the prospect; pumped until our guides handed us our avalanche packs.

These packs contained a number of items including a shovel and a locator beacon. I understood that there was no imminent avalanche danger and the guides knew exactly where to go and, more importantly, where not to go. But there’s always that moment of trepidation when you encounter something that reminds you of your vulnerability in the face of Mother Nature’s power. I remember reacting the same way when I moved to the Northwest and saw those “Tsunami Hazard Zone” signs with the stick figure running for his life.”

Northwest Travel Magazine: Rafting 101-Navigating Northwest Rivers

1 08 2013

In my second feature for Northwest Travel Magazine I tell the story of my week long journey with Rogue Wilderness Adventures. This was easily the best time I’ve had doing “research” for a story. From the story:

“I had been rafting before, but only on a handful of quick half-day trips; never anything like this. I always experience butterflies when getting back in a raft. My senses are heightened, eyes are widened, but all worries go away once I hit the first rapid and get doused with cold mountain water. Like some sort of fear-baptismal, the trepidation is washed away and I’m born again with an ear-to-ear grin.”

Picture of the Week: Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

6 05 2013

I was recently hosted to an ATV tour of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area by Spinreel Dune Buggy & ATV Rentals. However, I struggled getting photos of the dunes. No matter where I placed myself, I just couldn’t capture the vastness of it all. Then near the end of my ride I spotted this tree in the middle of the dunes. Kind of away from the other oasis areas, and trying to make a go of it on his own. And by the looks of him, having a rough time. I fell in love with this tree. I don’t know, it might not be all that exciting of a shot, but that tree and me, we shared something 🙂

Northwest Travel Magazine: Courier Coffee

1 05 2013

I wrote an article in the May edition of Northwest Travel Magazine about a place that I believe has the best Coffee in Portland. A bold statement I know, but give it the Pepsi Challenge sometime and get back to me if you take umbrage. Click here for the online teaser, or check out the latest edition of Northwest Travel Mag to read the whole piece.

From the article:

Courier Coffee Roasters does many things other elite Northwest roasters do. They focus on high-quality, single-origin beans, showcasing the terroir of specific regions. They have relationships with the farms and cooperatives from which they source. And they also focus on light and medium roasts. But Domreis’ shop ups the ante in all three aspects and then adds more to the pot.

“We want the best beans we can get,” says Domreis, “but we also source from people who are doing things the right way. Fair-trade and organic are great, but if they had to clear-cut acres of rainforest in order to do it, I’d rather source from a farm that’s not organic, but whose methods I know and trust.”

Picture of the Week: Dog Sledding on Frozen Swan Lake

11 03 2013

I spent the last week in Western Montana”s Glacier Country, on assignment for Northwest Travel Magazine. During that time I reveled in new experiences, marveled at stunning landscapes, and made new friends and countless memories. And took a metric ton of photos. Seriously, look forward to many Pictures of the Week coming from this recent trip. This shot is from a dog sledding excursion we took with Base Camp Big Fork LLC on a frozen Swan Lake. The blend of Montana Big Sky scenery and a truly unique activity made for an experience that will stick with me for quite sometime.
