Northwest Travel Magazine: Rafting 101-Navigating Northwest Rivers

1 08 2013

In my second feature for Northwest Travel Magazine I tell the story of my week long journey with Rogue Wilderness Adventures. This was easily the best time I’ve had doing “research” for a story. From the story:

“I had been rafting before, but only on a handful of quick half-day trips; never anything like this. I always experience butterflies when getting back in a raft. My senses are heightened, eyes are widened, but all worries go away once I hit the first rapid and get doused with cold mountain water. Like some sort of fear-baptismal, the trepidation is washed away and I’m born again with an ear-to-ear grin.”

Picture of the Week: A Tale of Two Trails

10 09 2012

This is another shot from the “Hopilicious Hiking Trip” I took last week with Rogue Wilderness Adventures. We would hike along the Rogue River Trail during day, then sample beer in the evening. On this trip we had the brewmaster from Ninkasi, Mark, along for the entire excursion. In this photo you see one of my fellow hikers on the trail, and one of the rafts from the “Paddles and Pints” trip on the river just below. Paddles and Pints is the whitewater rafting version of the hiking trip, also run by Rogue Wilderness Adventures. Click on image for larger view.

Picture of the Week: The Rogue River Trail

The Picture of the Week is delayed a bit again this week due to a return trip to the Rogue River. I was a guest again of Rogue Wilderness Adventures, only this time for their Hopilicious Hiking trip. Hiking, beer tasting, rafting, and views like this for 4 glorious days and 3 nights. I would like to again thank all of the folks at Rogue Wilderness Adventures for throwing more awesome my way than one person can really be expected to handle. You are top shelf folks, top shelf! More from my recent trip on the Rogue River. This spot on the river was more about nap-tanning.

Picture of the Week: Rafting the Wild and Scenic Rogue River

23 07 2012

The Rogue River in southern Oregon is one of the original 8 to be included in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Last week I spent 4 days and 3 nights rafting and kayaking it as part of assignment for Northwest Travel Magazine. The trip, courtesy of Rogue Wilderness Adventures, was almost indescribably beautiful and inspiring. Which is bad news if you’re a travel writer. This picture is a particularly scenic spot called Mule Creek Canyon. You can click on the photo for a larger view.
