My latest for Sip Northwest tells the story behind one of my favorite trips from last summer – paddling wine 65 miles down the Willamette River for Illahe Vineyards. But there’s so much more to it than that! Click here to read the story.

Sip Northwest Magazine: How to Drink Beer Made in Olympia
26 04 2019My first story for Sip Northwest Magazine details the thriving craft beer scene in Olympia, Washington. From the story:
“There was a time not all that long ago that Olympia was considered more of an I-5 afterthought between Portland and Seattle than a place worth spending any quality time. If you haven’t been lately, that’s changed. The shift toward destination status is reflected in a number of artisanal and craft pursuits, not the least of which would be the beer. The Olympia Brewing Co. may be gone, but here’s a rundown of some establishments that have picked up the brewing baton in Washington State’s capital, and are running with it.”

Northwest Travel & Life Magazine: Stay in a Boatel
6 03 2019The latest issue of Northwest Travel & Life features a story that was an awful lot of fun to research. Pick up a copy on newsstands now or click here to read the PDF version. From the article:
“In the neverending quest to seek out unique lodging options, we Northwesterners can go to some great and enjoyable lengths. We’ve hiked to backcountry lodges, stayed in lofty treehouses, slept in lavish five-star resorts, and built cozy stove fires in primitive yurts. All proven options. And all in the name of experiencing this wonderful corner of the globe in new and exciting ways.
Yet somehow, while we weren’t looking, Boatels slipped into the mix. The practical melding of the words “boat” and “hotel,” a Boatel is essentially a floating overnight accommodation. Though typically in the form of a stationary houseboat there is some variance. While all have placement on the water in common, locations range from quiet coastal rivers teaming with wildlife to marinas that are just steps away from destination dining and shopping options. They can be vacation rentals or Airbnb’s. But unequivocally, every one of them offers a new perspective on the places we want to explore. Here are a few of our favorite Northwest Boatels.”
