Northwest Travel & Life Magazine: Old Highway 99 Road Trip

11 01 2022

Up until the completion of Interstate 5, Route 99 was the main north-south highway running the length of America’s west coast, from Mexico to Canada. In the Northwest, much of that old route still exists. And while it might not be as efficient with regard to driving time as I-5, its winding path through Oregon wine country from Portland to Eugene showcases the best the Willamette Valley has to offer – and makes for a spectacular road trip! Let me tell you about it here.

Northwest Travel & Life Magazine: Hiking the National Wildlife Refuges of the Willamette Valley

30 03 2021

I’ve always enjoyed NWR’s for their natural beauty and wildlife viewing opportunities. But I never really considered them as places that possess many viable hiking options. However, the pandemic caused me to reassess the things that I wanted in a hike. I always sought out things like solitude and lesser-visited trails – something that NWR’s always offer. But they also often provide miles of wide dirt, gravel, or maintenance road trails that are great for social distancing. And so this story idea was born from last year’s new-found appreciation of hiking in NWR’s. Click here to read it.
