Picture of the Week: The Oregon Coast

I know the title is kind of vague. This shot was taken looking towards the Inn at Otter Crest from the Flying Dutchman Winery. Not a bad spot for wine tasting eh? Click photo for larger image.

Red Tricycle: A Hidden Waterfall Oasis

My latest article for Red Tricycle is about the Oneonta Gorge. It has perhaps one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the Gorge and it is definitely my daughter’s favorite place to swim. Click here to give it a read.

Picture of the Week: Rafting the Wild and Scenic Rogue River

23 07 2012

The Rogue River in southern Oregon is one of the original 8 to be included in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Last week I spent 4 days and 3 nights rafting and kayaking it as part of assignment for Northwest Travel Magazine. The trip, courtesy of Rogue Wilderness Adventures, was almost indescribably beautiful and inspiring. Which is bad news if you’re a travel writer. This picture is a particularly scenic spot called Mule Creek Canyon. You can click on the photo for a larger view.

Picture of the Week: Kayaking on Coldwater Lake

9 07 2012

As part of an assignment for Northwest Travel Magazine, I went kayaking on Coldwater Lake near Mt St Helens this week. Kayaking on a lake near a volcano is always cool, but this one will be extra special. Northwest Eco Excursions are the first and only folks that can take you on a kayaking trip of that lake since Mt St Helens erupted 32 years ago! Click photo for larger view.

Picture of the Week: Tidepools on the Oregon Coast

25 06 2012

Taken yesterday from the tidepools at the Inn at Otter Crest. What an amazing weekend this was! (Click on pic for larger view).

Red Tricycle: Little Indy Jones – Unconventional Cave Adventures

My 2nd article for Red Tricycle is about one of my daughter’s favorite adventures, the Ape Caves. Click here to give it a read.

Portland Family Outdoors: Johnston Ridge Observatory

19 06 2012

If you live in Portland and haven’t made it to the north side of Mt St Helens yet, shame on you. Take a day out of summer and get up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. In the latest Portland Family Outdoors column I explore trails in the blast zone; where life has returned at a rate almost nobody thought possible. Read about it here. Picture of the Week: Hiking at Cape Perpetua

18 06 2012

This week’s photo is from the Discovery Loop Trail at Cape Perpetua. I took a short but very memorable hike there while on last month’s Central Oregon Coast Press Trip.
