Picture of the Week: Indian Heaven Wilderness

29 08 2012

The picture of the week is a bit delayed this time around because I was backpacking. Well here’s what was keeping me away from the computer. This was sunrise yesterday morning from my camp at Lake Sahalee Tyee in the Indian Heaven Wilderness. (Click on photo for larger image).

Picture of the Week: Silver Star Mountain

13 08 2012

Ed’s Trail on Silver Star Mountain might be pound for pound, the most scenic, wildflower-laden hike in the Portland area. Easily in my top 5 favorite hikes of all time. This shot is from a similar vantage of a previous Pic o’ the week, but dang….I just love this trail so much. Click on photo for larger view.

Portland Family Outdoors: Waterfalls of the Lewis River

1 08 2012

The Lewis River in Washington is home to some of my favorite camping and family-friendly hiking. Click here to read about it.

Picture of the Week: Kayaking on Coldwater Lake

9 07 2012

As part of an assignment for Northwest Travel Magazine, I went kayaking on Coldwater Lake near Mt St Helens this week. Kayaking on a lake near a volcano is always cool, but this one will be extra special. Northwest Eco Excursions are the first and only folks that can take you on a kayaking trip of that lake since Mt St Helens erupted 32 years ago! Click photo for larger view.

Red Tricycle: Little Indy Jones – Unconventional Cave Adventures

22 06 2012

My 2nd article for Red Tricycle is about one of my daughter’s favorite adventures, the Ape Caves. Click here to give it a read.

Portland Family Outdoors: Johnston Ridge Observatory

19 06 2012

If you live in Portland and haven’t made it to the north side of Mt St Helens yet, shame on you. Take a day out of summer and get up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. In the latest Portland Family Outdoors column I explore trails in the blast zone; where life has returned at a rate almost nobody thought possible. Read about it here. (Click on photo for larger view).

Portland Family Outdoors: Falls Creek Falls

8 05 2012

Another one of my family’s favorite spots. I swung by this place again just yesterday, and it’s still as breathtaking as ever. Click here to read the column.

Picture of the Week: Panther Creek Falls

7 05 2012

Located deep within Washington’s Wind River watershed, Panther Creek Falls is one of the most unique, awe-inspiring, and yet somehow tranquil waterfalls I’ve ever visited.

Portland Family Outdoors: Siouxon Creek

10 04 2012

“The Opal Creek of Washington”, Siouxon Creek is yet another pristine watershed in the vast wilderness of the Gifford Pinchot. It’s as accessible as old growth can be, and it’s where we’re going in this week’s Portland Family Outdoors. Read the article here.
